Work of the 11th VDV Brigade (confirmed by Kriegsforscher). The Russians seem to be having serious issues in advancing along Road 0504 over the recent weeks.
Also today, the 98th VDV Division carried out another large mechanized attack against the Kanal District of Chasiv Yar and the positions of the 67th Mechanized Brigade, suffering losses but managing to approach the first buildings in the eastern end of the district - unclear if they established control over the broadleaf forest (located between the district and the trenches system which was captured by the Russians about ten days ago). https://t.me/creamy_caprice/4989
Two different attacks.
Little to add to what u/Duncan-M wrote.
I think the Russians will try to take the Kanal District, which is going to be very difficult but would give them control over the high-rises there and thus the capability to look at the other side of the town. At that point I don’t know if they would dare to try to cross the Donets-Donbas Canal directly from there. I find it likely that they will try to expand as much as possible their control over the eastern bank of the canal, which passes right along the heights that are the watershed between the Kryvyi/Kazennyi Torets and the Bakhmutovka basins. They could focus on two directions. The one to the north, i.e. taking the rest of Bohdanivka and then going up the heights near Hryhorivka and Kalinina. And/or the one to the south, that is, seizing the rest of Ivanivske and moving westwards and southwards. The Russians are having troubles taking the south-western part of this village, partly because of the unfavorable elevation compared to the surrounding areas, and the Ukrainians are defending it house by house, with major losses on both sides. Should the Russians succeed in this objective, by moving south they could outflank the high ground north-west of Klishchiivka and at that point make it very doubtful whether the Ukrainians could remain in the latter village and in Andriivka. Westwards they could advance along Road 0504 (in the direction of Stupochky) and try to cross the canal there. There are several forested areas on both sides of the canal and those are the ones I would pay most attention to, if I were in the Ukrainians - I would burn the ones on the eastern bank to take away the possibility for the Russian assault groups advancing there of hiding themselves from the drones (before the artillery does that anyway over the course of weeks of fighting). Russian efforts towards Klishchiivka are unsuccessful and they have been beating their heads against it for months, but if they were to succeed and force the canal from there (as PMC Wagner managed to do in late January 2023) they could establish a “bridgehead” in the western bank, which if repeated to the north, could put Chasiv Yar in a kind of salient. Moreover, potential successes to the south could be useful if in the future the Russians want to unfold, as some Ukrainian observers suspect, an offensive operation aimed at Toretsk. It remains that for the Russians, in general, taking Chasiv Yar will be by far one of the most complicated operations of this war.
