The amount of natural gas arriving from Ukraine, which for the vast majority once used to supply Italy, has already dropped enormously compared to 2021 and the former record highs. Today, just Austria and Hungary (and to a lesser extent Slovakia) receive gas from that pipeline. And Hungary receives most of its (Russian) gas via the Turkstream from Serbia - a year ago they had already taken steps to bring that pipeline to full capacity without depending anymore on flows from Ukraine, so these guys will find yet another way to get their asses covered. Austria is already importing an important part of its needs from Germany, which is activating a large number of LNG terminals; in June there was also a small net flow of gas from Italy to Austria, a LNG terminal is being activated there this year and another one next year, so Italy too will be able to contribute to meet a share of Austria’s needs in the future with Germany being the largest supplier.
